Diva House Music: Get Up and Dance

Comments

Work it, girl. Strike a pose. Get up on the dancefloor and get down to the anthemic beats of Diva House Music.

Diva House, a.k.a. Handbag House, is a subgenre of house music with roots in disco. It gained popularity in queer clubs in the 1980s and ‘90s. Known for its anthemic nature and vivid female voices, Diva House symbolizes the essence of celebration and emancipation on dance floors worldwide.

What is Diva House?

The name “Handbag House” became popular in British dance culture, evoking images of female clubgoers dancing energetically around a pile of handbags, and was originally meant to be insulting. The “diva” in Diva House refers to the female vocalists in the genre who the gay community has adopted as their own. As queer clubs and culture gained mainstream exposure, Diva House was essential in bridging the gap between underground dance music and the broader public.

Legendary divas like Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Liza Minelli significantly impacted the genre. Their powerful vocals and gay icon status provided the foundation for many popular Diva House anthems.

Some members of the dance music scene labeled it “plastic disco” due to its popularity among mainstream listeners. In retaliation, these underground purists were drawn to spin-off genres: hardbag, progressive house, deep house, and garage house.

Diva House mostly died out by the end of the 1990s but resurfaced as Nu-Disco shortly after. EDM bands with mainstream success, like Disclosure, have contributed to the revival of Diva House Music with releases such as F For You featuring legendary Diva Mary J. Blige.

The feminine energy of Diva House encourages everyone to embrace their inner diva and the joys of music and self-expression.

A Brief History

The Late 1980s/Early 1990s: Foundations

  • In the late 1980s, house music had already established a strong presence in the dance music scene. During this time, artists and producers began experimenting with more prominent vocal performances, which led to the creation of the Diva House sound. Early tracks that featured powerful female vocals laid the groundwork for this emerging genre.
  • CeCe Peniston’s hit single “Finally” from 1991 is often regarded as one of the quintessential tracks of Diva House. Peniston’s success opened the door for other vocalists and producers to further develop and refine the Diva House sound.
  • Martha Wash’s contributions in the late 1980s and early 1990s cemented her status as a critical figure in Diva House. Known for her powerful voice, Wash’s work on tracks like “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” and “Everybody Everybody” became legendary. Her influence was instrumental in shaping the vocal style and energy central to Diva House.
  • Another iconic Diva House track is Robin S.’s “Show Me Love” from 1990. The song’s memorable hook and Robin’s soulful vocals propelled it to international acclaim, establishing it as a timeless classic.

Evolution in the 2000s:

  • In the 2000s, Diva House continued to evolve, incorporating new sounds and production techniques. Artists like Deborah Cox and Kristine W infused the genre with contemporary elements, blending traditional Diva House sounds with modern electronic music.

Characteristics of Diva House

Pulsating Rhythms Inspired by Disco and Gospel: Diva house is characterized by its driving rhythms, often propelled by a four-on-the-floor beat. The richness of gospel influences can be heard in the vocals, while the uplifting nature of disco is evident in the chord progressions and overall arrangements.

Uplifting Themes: Themes of empowerment, love, and liberation are common in Diva House, with lyrics that inspire optimism and joy. Memorable melodies and catchy hooks are essential, drawing listeners in and keeping them engaged throughout the song.

Piano Stabs: Another hallmark of Diva House is the use of “piano stabs”—short, rhythmic chord progressions played on a piano or synthesized keyboard. These stabs punctuate the music, adding energy and intensity to the rhythm.

Club-Friendly Arrangements: Composers and songwriters craft Diva House tracks with the dance floor in mind. Arrangements often feature dynamic peaks and valleys, breakdowns, and build-ups to maximize the impact on listeners, ensuring the music remains engaging and energizing from start to finish.
