What is UK Drill Music?

Comments

Brixton is a gentrifying and vibrant area of South London, but the music of UK Drill reveals the realities of this working-class neighborhood.

UK Drill, a subgenre of drill and road rap music, has emerged as a defining voice of urban youth in the United Kingdom. With its raw, gritty sound and hard-hitting lyrics, UK Drill offers an unfiltered glimpse into the lives of young people growing up in some of the country’s most challenging environments. This genre has captivated listeners and sparked intense debate about its cultural significance and social impact.

Brief History

UK Drill, while derived from Chicago Drill, is unique in its own right. It evolved with a distinct sound and style, marked by dark, bass-heavy beats and lyrics often referencing violence and crime. It’s generally faster-paced compared to the Chicago style and rarely, if ever, uses Autotune. UK Drill groups are often comprised of gang members. The group, 150 (now known as GBG) from Brixton’s Angell Town Estate is widely regarded as the pioneer of UK Drill music, with members like Stickz, M Dargg, and GR1ZZY leading the early charge. Another influential group, and rival to 150, is 67. They helped move the sound away from its Chicago influences towards a more independent British tone. These early artists used platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud to share their music, attracting a young and diverse fan base.

A VICE article divided the evolution of the UK Drill into three separate phases.

  • Phase One: “Gritty Group-Based Genre,” lasting from 2014 to 2018, marked the genre’s creation as distinctly British. This period peaked in 2016 with the release of “Let’s Lurk” by 67, which featured Giggs. However, due to its explicit content, UK Drill received rejection from mainstream music platforms. Instead, they had to rely on music videos for broad exposure. Another hurdle was Form 696, a risk assessment form in the UK from 2008 – 2017, which forced many promoters to cancel Drill artist performances. However, thanks to social media, the genre didn’t slow down.
  • Phase Two: “The Growth of Radio-Ready Music”. Drill became more marketable as younger stars emerged, accelerating its growth. Artists began incorporating catchy hooks and choruses, creating poppier tunes that followed a more radio-friendly song formula. The first Drill song to enter the UK Top Ten was Russ’s “Gun Lean” in 2018.
  • Phase Three: “The Rise of Alternative Sound” began in 2020. Drill artists began experimenting with different sounds, and Drill producers began collaborating with international stars like Drake.

Controversy

UK Drill has faced significant backlash. Authorities and media outlets have linked the genre to rising knife crime and gang violence in London and other cities. Police have even taken measures to remove specific Drill videos from YouTube, arguing that they incite violence and perpetuate gang culture.

Artists and fans, however, see things differently. They argue that UK Drill reflects reality rather than a cause of violence. For many young people, the music is a way to cope with their circumstances and express their frustrations. Additionally, UK Drill provides a platform for marginalized voices, offering a form of empowerment through art.

UK Drill Characteristics

  • Aggressive Lyrics: UK Drill lyrics talk about the harsh realities of street life. They often mention violence, crime, and social issues. Artists use vivid images and clever wordplay to share their experiences, clearly depicting urban life.
  • Dark Melodies: UK Drill’s music is characterized by ominous melodies and haunting chord progressions, setting a tense and atmospheric mood that complements the lyrical content.
  • Complex Drill Beats: The beats in UK Drill are usually fast and intense, with rhythms that don’t follow a simple pattern. They often feature quick hi-hat sounds and heavy basslines, typically around 140-150 beats per minute. Producers use sliding bass and strong kicks to give the music its unique sound.
  • Authentic Street Sound: UK Drill artists often use local culture and slang in their music, making it feel real and relatable. This connection to the streets resonates with listeners and adds depth to the genre, showing the artists’ true environment.
  • Incorporation of Diverse Elements: UK Drill mixes influences from different genres, such as Grime, Afrobeat, and various styles of gangsta rap. This blend of styles keeps the genre exciting and allows artists to experiment and innovate, ensuring UK Drill stays fresh and evolving.
