Britney Spears is Born

December 2, 1981

A millennial milestone: Britney Jean Spears entered the world on this Mississippi Wednesday. She took the stage at local talent shows and graduated to The Mickey Mouse Club, where she starred alongside Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera. Her 1998 debut single “…Baby One More Time” became the quintessential teeny-bopper anthem, followed by songs like “Oops!… I Did It Again” and “Toxic.”

Britney dominated radio, TV, and film screens, but fame brought challenges. After a highly publicized breakdown in 2007, she was placed in a conservatorship controlled by her father, fueling the #FreeBritney movement. Britney regained her independence in 2021 and is now entering a new chapter—one Instagram post at a time.

Attack on Pearl Harbor

December 7, 1941

On this day at 7:55 AM, Japan launched a sudden and devastating attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. A fleet of 360 Japanese warplanes bombarded the base, killing 2,400 Americans, wounding 1,200, and sinking or damaging numerous ships and aircraft. Despite rising diplomatic tensions, the attack caught U.S. forces unprepared.

President Roosevelt addressed the nation the following day, calling December 7, 1941, “a date which will live in infamy.” Congress declared war on Japan, thrusting the United States into World War II. Six months later, the U.S. struck back in a victory at the Battle of Midway.

First Basketball Game Played

December 21, 1891

The world can thank Canada—and peach basket manufacturers—for basketball. On this day, Canadian-born physical educator James Naismith introduced the first game in Massachusetts. To keep YMCA students active during the harsh New England winters, Naismith thought up 13 simple rules for two teams of nine.

He recalled the start in a 1939 interview: “I showed them [the teams] two peach baskets I’d nailed up at each end of the gym and told them to throw the ball into the opposing team’s basket.” B-ball quickly caught on at colleges, and Naismith became the first-ever basketball coach of Kansas University.

Winter Solstice

December 21, 2024

Welcome the longest night and shortest day of the year. The Northern Hemisphere observes Solstice around December 21, while the Southern Hemisphere celebrates theirs in June. From Scandinavia’s Saint Lucia Day to China’s Dongzhi Festival, people worldwide honor the return of longer days with a variety of special rituals.

In Guatemala, the Santo Tomas Festival boasts vibrant parades and fireworks, while in Iran, families come together for Shab-e Yalda with poetry readings and feasts. However it’s celebrated, the solstice brings sun-seekers together for brighter days ahead.

Night Before Christmas Published

December 23, 1823

“Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas,” better known as “The Night Before Christmas,” was first published anonymously in the Troy Sentinel in New York. This timeless poem helped shape the modern Santa Claus, said to be inspired by a jolly Dutchman living in New York.

Who actually wrote the poem still sparks debate, with some crediting Clement Clarke Moore, while others back Henry Livingston Jr. Regardless, the poem reportedly began as a Christmas tale for the author’s children and continues to enchant generations to this day.

Get merry with our Archival Christmas collection.
