Black History Month
February 1, 2025
Every February, the United States honors the history and achievements of African Americans during Black History Month. It began in 1926 as “Negro History Week,” established by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. The week coincided with the birthdays of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln and focused on spotlighting the contributions of Black people long overlooked in history books.
In 1976, President Gerald Ford expanded it to a month-long celebration to ensure Black achievements received the recognition they deserved. Today, it celebrates influential figures like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Mae Jemison, and Barack Obama and inspires similar observances worldwide.

Founding of Facebook
February 4, 2004
From college coder to Meta mogul. On this day, Mark Zuckerberg launched TheFacebook with Harvard classmates Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. It was inspired by his earlier project, Facemash—a controversial site where users rated female students’ photos. TheFacebook was initially exclusive to Harvard students, then spread and attracted investment to open to the public as Facebook in 2006. Three years later, it was the world’s leading social network.
In 2021, TikTok downloads skyrocketed, and Facebook rebranded as Meta, in line with its ambitions of an immersive metaverse. Despite many controversies, Zuckerberg became the youngest self-made billionaire and has since pledged 99% of his Facebook shares to global causes through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

European Union treaty signed
February 7, 1992
The Maastricht Treaty was signed in the Netherlands, marking a pivotal moment in European history after the Cold War. Signed by representatives of 12 nations, the treaty laid the foundation for the European Union (EU). It introduced sweeping changes such as unified European citizenship, a common economic and monetary union, and the eventual launch of the euro.
The treaty’s implementation, which began in 1993, transformed Europe into a more integrated and unified region, increasing cooperation in security, legal affairs, and social policy. Today, with Brexit and ongoing border control discussions, the future of the EU remains to be seen.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science
February 11, 2025
This important day, now in its tenth year, highlights the need for more women to enter science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Their participation improves our ability to address the world’s greatest challenges, like improving health and fighting climate change. Diversity in research is essential for unlocking half of the world’s fresh perspectives, creativity, and talent.
Organizations like Girls Who Code, STEMettes, and the Girl Scouts are working to inspire and support young girls in pursuing STEM careers. This day reminds us that women and girls are critical to shaping the future of science and technology, and we must champion their participation.
