Yuri Gargarin becomes first man in space
April 12, 1961
The most thrilling 89 minutes the world has known—that’s how long Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space, orbited Earth. His achievement aboard Vostok 1 was a major space race milestone, making him a Soviet hero and global icon. Admired for his charisma and humility, he was celebrated with parades, awards, and monuments. Tragically, he died in a jet crash in 1968, but his legacy endures as a symbol of courage and exploration

BP oil spill in Gulf of Mexico begins
April 20, 2010
An explosion on BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig killed 11 workers and triggered the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. Over 3 months, 4.9 million barrels of crude oil spilled into the water, devastating local economies and wildlife. The disaster was found to be the result of ineffective government regulation and critical human error. BP faced billions in fines and criminal charges and recovery efforts remain ongoing.
