Welcome to the Glam Rock rebellion: Grab your platform boots and cover yourself in glitter.

The emergence of Glam Rock in the 1970s was the antithesis of the mainstream rock music of the 1960s. It wasn’t just a musical genre, though; it was a spectacle. The clothes, the hair, the sparkles. But Glam Rock was more than its look. It was musical glitter, built on distorted guitar riffs, pop hooks, pounding drums, and wild vocals. This was music that challenged norms, bent genders, and took the stage with theatrical flair.

What Is Glam Rock?

Glam rock is a style of Rock music that originated in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s. Musically, Glam Rock drew from 1950s Rock and Roll, blending it with elements of Bubblegum Pop, Hard Rock, and occasionally Art Rock, all filtered through the modern recording innovations. Aesthetically, Glam Rock was about being bold and over-the-top. Artists often wore outrageous costumes, heavy makeup, and embraced androgynous looks. Playing with gender roles and stage personas was part of the performance.

The movement pushed boundaries, challenging conventional notions of gender and identity, and had a profound influence on the LGBTQI+ community. It left a permanent mark on both the music and fashion industries.

History of Glam Rock Music

Origins of Glam Rock

The late 1960s Rock scene was centred on authenticity and perceived seriousness. Glam Rock developed as a reaction to that, particularly in the context of Psychedelic Rock and Art Rock. The goal of the Glam Rock artist was to make musical performances fun again using showmanship and spectacle. The genre’s emphasis on style and performance over musical complexity marked a significant shift in the Rock landscape.

Like all musical genres, origins are fuzzy, and who qualifies as a Glam Rocker is contentious. The (arguably) most prominent early Glam Rock artists include:

  • David Bowie: Perhaps the most influential Glam Rock artist, Bowie’s alter ego Ziggy Stardust epitomized the genre’s fusion of music and performance art.
  • T. Rex: Led by Marc Bolan, T. Rex brought Glam Rock to the mainstream with hits like “Get It On” and “Children of the Revolution.”
  • Roxy Music: Combining glam aesthetics with avant-garde art rock, Roxy Music, fronted by Bryan Ferry, pushed the boundaries of the genre.
  • Slade and Sweet: These bands contributed to the Glam Rock movement with their catchy tunes and flamboyant stage presence.

The Flash of Glam Rock

The first few years of the 1970s marked the heyday of Glam Rock. As the ‘70s continued, the genre evolved and new names emerged, inspired by the flashy costumes and free expression of the era. Bands like Aerosmith, Queen, Twisted Sister, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, and Kiss aren’t strictly Glam Rock artists, but they were heavily influenced by it.

Glam Rock laid the groundwork for later queer icons, including Prince, Boy George, Freddie Mercury, and Lady Gaga. It influenced genres such as New Wave, Synthpop, and Glam Metal, which continued to explore gender and sexuality. The Struts or Måneskin have a contemporary take on Glam Rock.

LGBTQI+ and Glam Rock

Glam Rock had a rich and layered relationship with the LGBTQI+ community, particularly during its peak. Though not exclusively a queer movement, it carved out space in mainstream music for gender fluidity, sexual ambiguity, and androgynous self-expression.

The scene became a haven for queerness and gender nonconformity, offering both artists and fans space to openly explore their identities, sexuality, and fashion. Clubs, concerts, and fan communities evolved into subcultures where queer expression wasn’t just visible, it was celebrated.

Glam Rock also left its mark on drag, fashion, and performance art, blurring the boundaries of self-presentation and redefining what it meant to take the stage.
